Have you ever wanted to do effective human rights work overseas?

Would you like to work in Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, or Kenya helping to protect threatened human rights activists?

It is our pleasure to invite you to an upcoming PBI-USA Orientation Weekend.

The orientation is a phenomenal introduction to PBI’s work!  Peace team work – whether with Peace Brigades or other sister organizations operating around the world – is a serious endeavor that requires studied consideration before jumping in. The Orientation Weekend is designed to offer you a strong sense of how PBI operates, what the current situation is on the ground where we’re working, and diverse perspectives about what you might expect to experience as a human rights accompaniment volunteer.

The weekend's activities will give you a feel for the training methodology used by PBI field projects, such as small group discussions, role-plays, etc. The participatory methodology is informative and engaging, while honest about the challenges to help you decide whether or not PBI is right for you. You will interact with former PBI field volunteers from multiple projects, human rights experts from ally organizations, and people with experience in other peace team organizations. Click here to register.

Who should attend?

This Orientation is highly recommended for anyone considering applying to become a PBI Field Project volunteer, as it will offer valuable insight about the application process, life as a volunteer, the values of volunteering and life after PBI. Also, for those on the West Coast and long distances from the DC-area, please note that we will not be hosting an Orientation Weekend on the West Coast this year. Our apologies! We hope to return soon! In the meantime, please join us in Washington, DC and we'll find you a place to stay!

2017 Locations and Dates: TBD

Time Commitment: Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday 9:00am – 3:00pm.

The Orientation Weekend will run all day Saturday (up to dinner) and until mid-afternoon on Sunday. We encourage participants to attend the full weekend. If you are able to only attend one day or a portion of the weekend, please let us know during the registration process.

Registration Fee: $50

We work hard to ensure that the Orientation Weekend is affordable for participants. As such, we have instituted a registration fee to cover basic expenses of $50, which will need to be received with your registration form in order to confirm registration.

Lodging/Food: PBI-USA will try to provide participants with lodging (if desired); however we do not guarantee a place to stay.  Limited lodging is available on a first come, first serve basis. Send in your registration form as early as possible and we will do our best to find somewhere free for you to stay. PBI-USA will also send out information regarding affordable lodging options to participants when requested. PBI-USA will be providing breakfast and lunch both days of the Orientation Weekend, but will not be responsible for participants’ dinners or other food (i.e. snacks).
